Gateway Operation Mode

*This policy is for Gateway Edges only

The Operation Mode is where Administrators can adjust the Wi-Fi hotspot settings for the Secure Gateway Edges devices within a selected group.

There are three different Modes the Secure Gateway Edge can be set to:

  1. Gateway Mode
  1. Gateway Mode - Wi-Fi Hotspot On
  1. Client Mode

This policy is applied through the Byos Management Console, and not the local Dashboard. This policy is only applicable for Gateway Edge devices - Changes made to this policy will not affect Secure Endpoint Edge Devices

Gateway Mode

Gateway Mode is when the Secure Gateway Edge works as a 1-to-1 Ethernet Gateway where the protected endpoint is connected via ethernet into ETH2 and the connection upstream to the network is connected into ETH1 (port closer to the power supply).

Gateway Mode - Wi-Fi Hotspot On

Wi-Fi Hotspot Options:

  • Turn the Hotspot On or Off
  • Hide the network
  • Change the Network name (SSID)
  • Change the password
  • Toggle the frequency between 2.4 and 5 GHz

Any changes to the Operation Mode policy will cause the Gateway Edge devices in the group to reboot. If you want to change the Wi-Fi hotspot of a single Gateway Edge, please move it to it’s own group.

My IoT devices will not connect to the Secure Gateway Edge Wi-Fi Hotspot

If your IoT devices aren’t connecting to the Wi-Fi hotspot, please ensure the frequency is set to 2.4GHz. Most IoT devices are only compatible with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks. To confirm, please check the specs of your IoT devices.

I cannot see the Gateway Edge’s Wi-Fi Hotspot

If you cannot see the Byos Secure Gateway Edge’s Wi-Fi Hotspot, please check the Operation mode policy settings for the proper group.

If the Wi-Fi hotspot is enabled, but you still cannot see it, please check to see if the hotspot has been hidden. A Hidden Wi-Fi Hotspot Network will not broadcast the SSID. Anyone who wishes to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot will have to manually enter the SSID information rather than selecting it from a list of available networks.

Client Mode

In Client Mode, the Secure Gateway Edge will connect to the Local Wi-Fi Network as a Client. This mode is for when Wi-Fi connectivity is needed for legacy device, industrial, and desktop applications.

If the Local Wi-Fi network drops, how does the Secure Gateway Edge respond?

If the Local Network Wi-Fi signal drops the connection to the Secure Gateway Edge, the Gateway Edge will attempt to reconnect to the network 3 times before performing a reboot. After rebooting, it will try to connect to the Wi-Fi three (3) more times, and reboot again if the connection is unsuccessful. It will perform this “Try to connect 3 times and then reboot” in an infinite loop until the Wi-Fi connection is re-established.

Finding Networks in Range

If you see “Networks in Range: no data available in table” (image below), please unplug and replug the power supply. Please ensure the ethernet cables are plugged in before the power supply.
